Tai Cheong Bakery at Takashimaya Department Store, Singapore

Question: Where you can find the best restaurants / hawker stall / food kiosks here in Singapore? The answer? Just follow the queue! I heard this tip a long time ago and thought that friends and colleagues were probably joking. Let me tell you that this is one thing you have to believe and take seriously as we speak the truth. The simplest way to know where to eat is to go for the stall with the longest queue. I got to admit though that the Pinoy in me hates queuing up and while I will never jump or cut queues, I have the tendency to go for the ones with the shorter line or even those with none at all. We gotta support them too, right? I'd like to think that there can never be a bad meal here in Singapore. With hawker stalls lasting for decades and restaurants opening one after the other, the food industry here is definitely alive and kicking.  So, on those rare occassions that I found myself with a couple of hours to spare, I found Tai Cheong Bakery  at the bas...

Portuguese Egg Tarts Showdown: Lord Stow's vs. Margaret's Cafe e Nata

Image
When Paul and I went to Macau a year ago, we really do not have any set itinerary then. It was an overnight stay and we're just open to going wherever the wind (or in our case, the shuttle bus) took us. There was just one thing though, we wanted to try authentic Portuguese Egg Tarts as we're both crazy about it. In Manila, we'd frequent Lord Stow's Bakery and figured that if it was already yummy in Manila, what more if we go to its "homeland"? So on our first day, we saw Lord Stow's Bakery at The Venetian and despite having had our lunch an hour ago, we parked ourselves in a small corner table and had a piece of Egg Tart each. The line was quite long and so it took me about 10 minutes before I finally got our order. I carefully brought the warm bag of egg tarts to our table where Paul was excitedly waiting for me the egg tarts ( *sigh* who am I kidding? ). Look how the top glistens in this photo? I'm happy to say that Lord Stow's egg t...

Lovin' it at Hong Kong: Sweet Endings

Image
Unlike our Guangzhou trip which was filled with new food discoveries , our Hong Kong escape was a bit more laid back... too laid back in fact that we veered away from searching high and low for interesting food spots. What stood out, however, were the desserts that capped our meals during the three days that we were there. Mango Loco During our first night in Hong Kong, Paul and I walked around the neighborhood to re-familiarize ourselves with Tsim Sha Tsui. While walking along one busy road, we saw a small brightly-lit store that actually has a crowd waiting outside. This got us so curious that we quickened our steps towards the store to see what it's all about. On the counter were laminated menus with photos of iced mango drinks. Scanning the menu, we realized that Hui Lau Shan is a dessert store and inside are tables filled with teenagers and yuppies enjoying their fruity desserts. In order to satisfy our curious state, we ordered a Mango Sago to share. After waiting for two ...
