Celebrating 30 years of Penang Hawker Fare at York Hotel, Singapore

Image
Two years ago, Penang was declared by Lonely Planet as the Top Foodie Destination in 2014 . I personally haven't been to this part of Malaysia but after being convinced by my good friend K to go and visit for a nice weekend food trip, I know that I got to make it happen soon. Call it perfect timing. I was recently invited by York Hotel  to check out their latest buffet promotion featuring the top hawkers of Penang . Apparently, this has been running for 30 years already! Can you imagine? That was back in 1986 when Singapore was surely not the modern cosmopolitan, clean and green city that it is today. This was created during the time when travelling to Penang wasn't that easy yet and so the hotel decided to treat its patrons with the best of what Penang has to offer by running this buffet promotion three times a year. Today, flying to Penang will only take you an hour or so but for those who can't really take a leave from work or would rather stay in Singapore for...

#FrannyCooks Special : Balinese Cooking Demo at Mandarin Oriental Singapore

Image
I'd say, Paul and I had a really productive Labor Day. Luckily, we laborers got a day off from work which allowed us to catch up on sleep, finish all domestic duties and to learn something new! Yes, you read that right. I love taking classes as it allows me to know a new skill or to sharpen something that I already know to be better. After all, learning should be a lifelong process. So, we spent two hours on Labor Day at Mandarin Oriental Singapore to learn how to cook Balinese food! Living away from home, I'd say our kitchen know-how has improved greatly from cooking sunny-side-up eggs to pasta and recently, we've become more bolder in experimenting on more complicated dishes. Nonetheless, we've stuck closely to Filipino and Chinese cuisines. These two that we both grew up eating at our respective homes. So, I was really intrigued as to what Balinese cuisine is all about. As soon as our class started, Chef Heinz von Holzen of Bumbu Bali Restaurant & Cookin...

Image
Frannywanny's note: A few weeks ago, I embarked on a new challenge. Yes, new home, new environment, new life...new challenge! 2013 is really something, noh? I joined the Tefal Chef Challenge  together with 4 other food/cooking bloggers and the first step was to attend a cooking demo with local Chefs Benson Tong and Jason Vito. Click here for the full website as I would be need all  your support very soon! Here's the entry that I've posted in the official Tefal Chef Challenge site . Just like anything in this world, one has to train in order to learn and to master whatever skill he or she would like to acquire. This training takes days...months...sometimes years and together with it comes a good amount of dedication and willpower in order to succeed. Of course, there's also the question of who should train YOU. In every field, we have the masters. One who's knowledge we wish would be imparted to us, the skill we hope we would someday embody and the respect that w...

Finding my Inner Passion in the Kitchen

Image
Yesterday, I was invited by my fellow publisher Mello to join her and her editors to visit the Center for Culinary Arts in Eastwood to ignite our inner passion. Despite being so busy, I immediately said yes even without reading the email. It was only that morning when I found out what exactly we will be doing and how long it will take. I've always dreamed to be a chef. Nothing makes me happier than bringing out my creativity on a plate. I love food and food loves me. 'Nuff said. During the introductions made, we found out that the Kitchen Discovery Class is a pre-requisite for all aspiring culinary students of the CCA. Here, the students will be evaluated based on their kitchen readiness and as they will be given the chance to get a better glimpse of what to expect for the two-year diploma course. That afternoon, we just had our session for two-hours but man, it has really ignited my love for the kitchen.I love the kitchen auditorium! It's fully-equipped with all...

Del Monte Kitchenomics : Quick and Easy recipes in a click

Image
While searching for recipes to try in the web, I happen to stumble upon the Del Monte Kitchenomics website and I had a great time browsing through its interesting and helpful features. I really was looking for something new to try but what really sets me back from cooking lately is the time needed to prepare, cook and to serve. I have a very hectic schedule that I even have to make time to relax and unwind. However, I miss our kitchen and being able to cook up a storm for my family to enjoy. While browsing through the website, I found a couple of recipes that are time-friendly. Cool! They also have a section featuring recipes that won't go beyond P80! This, my mom would surely love as she will be able to whip up a dish that's very affordable and seems to be very delicious too! Among all the web features, I love the Budget Tools tab that has a Price Watch and a Seasonal Produce list! No more second guessing when my favorite fruits will be in season. Want to be update...

What a YUMMY-ful world!

Image
I can't believe it's finally OUT! As the first copy of the book was handed to me last week, I carried it around the office like a proud mommy :) Presenting, the first ever Yummy Book entitled Meals in Minutes . This is the first of three books that we will be launching for this year. You'll love this first book because it presents 65 super easy recipes! I'm talking about the kind that you can easily make in less than 10, 20 or 30 minutes! It's like a cooking show on print! You'll also love the beautiful mouthwatering photos that will encourage you to try the recipes yourself. Here's my favorite recipe of all: Oriental Fried Rice . Not known to many, fried rice is my weakness. I may be able to skip not eating plain rice for a year but cook it with some oil, as some garlic, onion leeks, meat and egg then that's when I raise the white flag on one hand and a spoon on the other. I totally adore eating fried rice and I'm so happy to have this as our cover...
